how do you rate the red wine in your country? compared to elsewhere? more specifically, which are the best wine growing regions?

The question cannot be answered due to the fact that the best wines are a matter of opinion. A person who really enjoys red wine will be able to appreciate red wines from many countries since nowadays quality and technological advances are being seen all over the world. Macedonian red wine called ‘Aleksandria’ is a world trade mark, even it comes from a small European country whic is full with wine growing regions, but the most knowing is Kavadarci.I don’t think that you have ever heard about this country and this wine, but it’s delicious and you should try it someday.

I agree 100% with BigBoss. South African wines are by far the best but hard to find.

The international panel of judges recently decided in blind taste tests that USA wines are better than even French and Italian wines. I heard the French and Italian Judges didn’t know how they could return home after choosing the American wines.

I love wines from places like Applegate Valley, Oregon, USA. Tiny boutique wneries like Troon Vineyard (try Druid’s Fluid, $20, troonvineyard.com) make some exceptional wines.

The only way to really tell is to judge them side by side varietal to varietal. Then with several (at least 5 or 6) from each region that you are trying side by side each vineyard and winery will have different and unique taste base on growing climate, soil and yeasts used in production of the wine. Then other factors like type of barrel and length of barrel aging if any will also affect the taste, so…. what it all comes down to is "what taste good to you" and don’t let any one else tell you what you will and will not like.

I hate wine (and yes I’ve sampled several kinds) but surprisingly like the Australian wines. Shiraz is the best I’ve had.

I prefer Italian red wines but, there are quite a few red wines from the Finger Lakes Region of Upstate New York that are really good.
One of my favorites is produced by a vineyard called Bully Hill and it’s called Love My Goat their Estate Red is great too. The wines come with uniquely drawn labels too so the outside of the bottle is just as nice as what comes in it.

I agree with capollar – it comes down to personal taste.

In places like France and Italy, there are enormous differences in the characteristics of the wine from each region (and even within each region), so I would argue that it is difficult to answer the question at the country level. Of course there are regional differences in the US and Australia as well, though most of their popular wines are produced from grapes from Europe, and the challenge there is to discover which grape variety grows best in the chosen microclimate.

My favorite red wine is from Bourgogne and Bordeaux in France, and next from Lombardia in Italy (espeically Valtellina).

I live in Japan, which is not known as a great wine producing country. That said I have had some good red wine here, though generally I think the whites are better, especially wines made from Koshu (a domestic grape) and Chardonnay. Grace, a popular maker here, makes world-class level Chardonnay. They make a good merlot also (and koshu and many others.) Try some if you can find it!

South Africa, Australia, California, Spain and Italy are all well known for there wines, red and otherwise… but everything about wine starts and end in one country, and one country only — FRANCE!!

There is an ongoing battle over which country has the best wines. It depends on the person and the wine. There are some bad wines being made everywhere…and some great ones as well. However, Zinfandel seems to be uniquely Californian. You will find the best Zinfandels from California. Great wineries to choose from include: Renwood, Rosenblum, Ridge, and Turley.
